Author: We just moved in to a rental house and it smells like cat urine. I have rug doctored and sprayed pet odor removers. Nothing seems to be helping.. if anything the smell seems worse than ever. Is there any products that seem to work on removing cat urine odor?
Use listerine or any brand of mouth wash.Just dont use the “blue” kind cuz it will stain carpets. I use the Equate(walmart) brand It really works. I used it in my steamcleaner and got that horrible smell out of my carpets. The people who lived in our house before let their cat use every corner of the house as his personal urinal. It took 2 applications..but the smell came out.

go to a pet store and buy a product called natures mericle stain and oder remover i work at a superpetz and it is the most sold oder remover we have i might have the spelling wrong though. good luck

Cat pee is almost impossible to get out! I have heard some say that a mix of vinegar and water is best, but it never worked for me. Neither did OxiClean, Nature's Miracle, or any other product I bought. I haven't tried the new Urine Gone they advertise on television yet. Might be worth it.
The only other thing to do is to get new carpet. The problem is, that the cat pee has probably soaked through the carpet, and into the pad and maybe even the floorboards.
A little off topic, buts funny nonetheless. I had a cat a few years ago that would pee on my clothes sometimes. Well, I did a load of laundry, performed the "sniff test," and didn't detect any cat pee smell on the shirt I wanted to wear. I was in college at the time, and the class I was going to was crowded. So, I am sitting in there, and its starting to get hot. Suddenly, I get a whiff of cat pee. Turns out, the shirt I had on DID have cat pee on it…it just took my body heat to bring out the smell. I was soooo self-conscious! I just knew the people around me could smell it. I wanted to WALLOW in some perfume! I hate the smell of cat pee. Its stinky enough to knock a cow over.

Ask the landlord to pull up the carpet, Binz or Kilz the floor boards and replace the carpet. It isn't just in the carpet, it is in the floor boards under the carpet. When you use a carpet cleaner it is only added liquid to a dry stain. It will bring it out again, like new. I agree with one of the other answers. MOVE! If the landlord doesn't fix the problem properly, MOVE! It's in the floor boards too. Carpet replacement will only mask the problem with new carpet smell for a short period of time.

Brother-in-laws house. Same issue. Cat urine actually staining the hard wood floors under the carpet. No more hard wood floors. He actually removed the hard wood floors just to get rid of the odor. And where it was still to be carpeted, he used a paint product called "Binz". It masked the odor, for good.

Febreze sucks. Bleach will smell forever and ruin the carpet. I agree with the folks that rec'd Natures Miracle. I have 9 cats. had them since they were kittens. they peed in places other than the litter box for a while. the only thing i found that worked was the Natures Miracle.

i am allergic to cats. and when i left the army the first apt i had suffered from the same problem. i ended up having to move.any rental property has to legally tell you of any permanent damage your dwelling has recvd. cat smell is considered almost lethal to some people. and if it has been saturated…there is no getting rid of it.

i had that problem with a car i bought. every expensive thing i tried did nothing. it seemed like as it got warmer, the smell carried further, and got more and more pungent. my mother-in-law bought some "fabreeze extra strength" and just sprayed the area that was the most concentrated with it until the bottle was empty. soaked and soaked and soaked it. left the windows rolled down (and made double sure before we started that it wasnt going to rain.) it took all day and part of the next day to get good and dry, but BEHOLD!!! it worked great! i dont know how…but it sure did.

There is a great product called "Urine Gone" it is the only thing I have found that really works. It is fantastic stuff. It is also great for when your husband misses the bowl. It has enzymes that actually attack the bacteria in the urine that cause the stain and smell.
