<< Would Stanley Steemer work to remove the smell of cat urine from carpet?  Can anyone help with a cat urine on carpet? >>

I have pulled up carpet and can now see just where the cat has gone. I know I can not bleach it. Is there anything that will actually work or do I just need to replace the wood?

Cat urine is so strong and so hard to get out of everything. I would replace the wood especially if the cat will still be around. They can smell much better than we can and tend to urinate in the same place when they can smell their mark.

    if still wet
    get up as much moisture as possible
    i would scrub with a good urine cleaner
    let dry
    scrub
    let dry
    scrub
    let dry
    then
    baking soda they are like three for a dollar i would use three
    open them up and put directly on the DRY wood
    let it sit for a week at least then clean up the baking soda
    give it a sniff
    smell better? then paint the heck out of it…paint dry paint dry
    still smell? repeat all the above
    still smell have to replace the wood
    good luck
    edited to add

    Clean the floor with some straight white vinegar, then rinse. Vinegar neutralizes cat urine.:)

    All you need to do is seal with a VERY high quality odor sealer, unless the wood is warped, or damaged in any structural way.

    There is something that actually will work to remove the odor, if you can find it. I haven't seen it in stores for a long time, so you might have to contact the company to learn where you can purchase it.

    Massengil Liquid Concentrate Douche, sold in a 2 ounce plastic bottle. You scrub the floor with the concentrated fluid, rinse and repeat as many times as it takes to remove the odor. Twenty years ago, nothing else worked.

    Now, if you've got floorboards that were soaked long enough in cat urine that the finish has been removed, you'll probably want to refinish the entire floor. But, it shouldn't be necessary to replace it.
