It’s a fact that cat pee smell is very unpleasant. When for some reason, the cat starts to relieve herself outside of his litter box and begins to pee all over the place, your entire home is bound to have an overpowering stink. Because cats are creatures of habit, they also tend to pee or defecate on the same spots they did their business on before. It is therefore crucial for you to put a stop to it when it starts.

The key to preventing cat pee smell from invading your home is to eliminate the urine’s scent completely. Cats depend on scent to track down the spot where they’ve peed before — and because their sense of smell is fourteen times more powerful than hours, mere soap and water will hardly get the job done.

For carpets, a common home remedy for getting the cat pee smell out is by vinegar and baking soda. After an old rag or paper towels have absorbed as much of the urine as it can, generously apply a mixture of three parts water and one part vinegar. Wait for the spot to dry before sprinkling the area with baking soda. Afterwards, pour a combination of ¾ cup peroxide and a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent. Beware that peroxide might cause discoloration — this step may be skipped if it does. Allow everything to soak. Once dried, the residue can be vacuumed up. It’s best to leave the solution in overnight for maximum results. If some of the cat pee smell is still there, repeat the same process.

For laundry like clothing, bed sheets, and others that could be placed in the laundry machine, add 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar along with your usual laundry detergent. For cement floors and walls (without wallpaper!), bleach can be very effective. It should be noted, however, that cat’s urine contains ammonia. The combination of bleach and ammonia releases deadly chlorine gas. It’s important that you clean the spot of cat urine thoroughly before applying bleach. Wash down the area with your cleaner (which should also not contain ammonia) and fresh water. Do it twice, or even three times. You can’t be too careful. In a spray bottle, mix ten parts water with one part bleach solution. With some rubber gloves on and a well-ventilated environment, lightly spray the area and let the solution sit for 30 seconds before wiping it off with a damp rag.

Because cat pee smell is very formidable, some people don’t have the patience for using home remedies. Pet stores usually sell cat urine cleaners that have enzymes that break down the urine and get rid of the cat pee smell effectively. They also take care of removing any stains that are left by your cat. With these solutions, cat pee smell should no longer be a problem for you.
